Understanding Skills Assessment in Australia

What is a skill assessment and why is it requires for Australian immigration?

A skills assessment is a formal evaluation by an authorised assessing body such as VETASSESS or Engineers Australia that verifies your qualifications and work experience match the requirements of your nominated occupation. It is a mandatory step for most skilled migration visa pathways, including subclass 189, 190, and 491.

VETASSESS is the primary skills assessing authority for a wide range of professional and technical occupations in Australia. It evaluates applicants across five assessment groups (A–E) based on ANZSCO skill levels, spanning everything from management and business roles to IT, science, and trade occupations.

ANZSCO is the official framework used to classify every occupation by skill level. Each occupation is assigned a unique six-digit code that determines which assessing body you apply to, the qualification level required, and your eligibility for specific visa subclasses.

If your occupation doesn’t appear on the relevant skilled occupation list, it may not be available for skilled migration at this time. If you are assessed but do not meet the requirements, VETASSESS will issue a written outcome detailing which criteria were not satisfied and you may be eligible to apply for reassessment with additional evidence.

VETASSESS only accepts priority applications when they are confident the 10-business-day timeline can be met. VETASSESS groups occupations into five assessment categories aligned with ANZSCO skill levels:
Group A / B (Skill Level 1): Australian Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral degree
Group C / E (Skill Level 2): AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma, or Diploma
Group D (Skill Level 3): AQF Certificate III (with additional work experience) or Certificate IV
